In order to alleviate the power shortage caused by the construction of the third line, the Gezhouba Hydropower Station, the first hydropower station on the Yangtze River, was built in Yichang. The Gezhouba Hydropower Station was built in 1971 and was completed in 1988. By this time, the construction of the third line was already over. With a total installed capacity of 2.715 million kilowatts, Gezhouba Hydropower Station was once the largest hydropower station in China.
